‘Poppy’ Clock

Kroeger Clock, 1869 (MC0259)

This clock originally belonged to a Mr. Wiebe. Someone purchased it from him at an unknown date and sold it to the Manitoba Museum, in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1971.

 

  • Description Thirty-hour wall clock with pendulum and weight-driven movement, probably made by David Kroeger (1829–1909) in Rosenthal, Russian Empire (now Ukraine), in 1869. Arched dial with a raised chapter ring is light with a single dark border around the perimeter. Arch has two hand-painted roses above a red poppy surrounded by leaves, rosebuds, and yellow flowers. Spandrels are hand-painted sprays of yellow flowers and a rose. Chapter ring is black with yellow Roman numerals and a white outer ring marking the minutes. One hand; rope drive; two weights.

Stamp on the gearbox, possibly denoting a sheet metal manufacturer.
